Gonzalo Otero Irurueta obtained his PhD in Condenser matter physics in 2010/10/22 by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain. In 2016 he won the FCT assistant researcher position to work at TEMA, University of Aveiro. He is the leader of the surface science laboratory that has an Ultra-High Vacuum system equipped with X-ray photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and other related techniques. His research spans over a wide range of materials science, physics and chemistry phenomena on surfaces, focusing on the study of low-dimensional systems: * Molecules on surfaces (self-assembly, heterogeneous catalysis, on-surface synthesis) * On-surface transformation of molecular precursors to obtain new molecular objects and nanostructures with novel physical and chemical properties. * Surfaces, interfaces, thin films and coatings * Structural and electronic properties of nanostructures on surfaces * 2D materials such as graphene, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, hexagonal Boron Nitride (h-BN) and Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (MoS2, WS2) and their functionalization * Devices based on functionalized surfaces: supercapacitors, solar cells, catalysts, sensors Experimental techniques: * Chemical and physical vapor deposition, thin film growth under vacuum and Ultra-High vacuum conditions * Characterization techniques: XPS, UPS, STM, AFM, SEM, LEED, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy * Synchrotron-based techniques: XPS, NEXAFS, LEEM, PEEM, SXRD Scientific production: several papers with an impact factor higher than 8 (Nature, Adv.
