Valentino Cattelan, PhD - Dottorato di Ricerca in Diritto ed Economia (09/06/2009; Università degli Studi di Siena); - Master in Diritto ed Economia (27/02/2008; Università degli Studi di Siena); - Master in Comparazione Giuridica (15/12/2005; Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata); - Laurea in Giurisprudenza (26/09/2003; Università degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata). I am a researcher in Islamic Law, Ethics and Finance, with a specific interest in Islamic finance as a practice of differentiation from conventional capitalism, as well as its transnational law, anthropology and cosmopolitan social geography. Since my PhD in Law & Economics (University of Siena, 2009) I have worked for several academic institutions, and namely: the University of Rome Tor Vergata (2010-2013); the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (2013-2014); the University of Florence (2014-2015); and the Saudi-Spanish Center for Islamic Economics and Finance, IE Business School (2015 onwards). In 2017 I was a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Law & Anthropology of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (Halle, Germany), and in 2018 a Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Studies in the Humanities "Law as Culture", University of Bonn. At the moment I am the Module Leader of "Law, Ethics and Society" at the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London. My research focuses on the classical fiqh of contracts, the application of Islamic law and economics in contemporary financial markets, the logic of Islamic fiqh and the accommodation of shari'ah compliant transactions in non-Muslim jurisdictions. In this light my studies intersect law, culture, economics and religion, with a particular emphasis on the comparison between fiqh and law as distinct normative disciplines, their underlying rationales and their combination (and conflict) in Islamic finance, as well as in contemporary Muslim societies at large. In general, I look at the nature of the law of Islamic finance as a cosmopolitan legality, determining the emergence of an alternative model of intermediation based on religious values beyond the secular space of conventional capitalism. In terms of publications in relation to my research interests, as mentioned above, - I am currently working on a monograph on "Religion and Contract Law in Islam: From Medieval Trade to Global Finance" (forthcoming 2020, Routledge); - I have published two edited books, on "Islamic Social Finance: Entrepreneurship, Cooperation and the Sharing Economy" (2019, Routledge) and "Islamic Finance in Europe: Towards a Plural Financial System" (Edward Elgar, 2013); - a broad number on articles in peer-reviewed academic journal, and in particular in "Arab Law Quarterly" (2017; 2013), "Oriente Moderno" (2017), "The International Journal for the Semiotics of Law" (2016), "JKAU, Islamic Economics" (2017) and "International Journal of Monetary Economics and Finance" (2009); - a variety of contributions in edited books (see section "Outputs"). As a recognized expert in the subjects of Islamic law, economics and finance, I have been recently invited in the SOAS Workshop in Islamic Finance (14/02/2019), I have participated in all the last editions of the most important event in the fields, the International Conference on Islamic Economics and Finance (in 2016, Kuala Lumpur; 2015, Qatar; 2013, Istanbul), and I have been invited as guest speaker in several events, both for academics, professionals and the public at large. In relation to my expertise, I was the Academic Coordinator of the European Module "Integrating Islamic Finance in the EU Market", granted by the Jean Monnet Programme - Jean Monnet Action, Lifelong Learning Programme: Grant Decision n. 2010-3566, at University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy (academic year 2010-2013). After that, I have been the recipient of numerous grants and scholarships to pursue my research in a variety of institutions, as previously mentioned.
