Ricardo Real Pedrosa de Sousa is an Assistant Professor in International Relations at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Beira Interior, where he also holds the position of President of the Department of Sociology. Additionally, he is an integrated researcher at the Centre for International Studies - Iscte/IUL. Previously, at the University Autónoma de Lisboa (UAL), he was an Associate Professor in International Relations. During his tenure at UAL, he took on various roles, including the coordination of the Ph.D. program in International Relations: Geopolitics and Geoeconomics, the coordination of the Master’s Program in International Relations, and roles as deputy director of the research center OBSERVARE and deputy director of the journal JANUS.NET, e-journal of International Relations. In addition, he is a guest lecturer at the Instituto Superior de Ciência de Educação da Huíla (ISCED-Huíla) in Lubango, Angola. He holds a Ph.D. from the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) at Erasmus University of Rotterdam (EUR) in the Netherlands, specializing in Political Science and International Relations. He has been associated with the Research School in Peace and Conflict (PRIO/NTNU/UiO) in Norway and the African Studies Center (CEA) at the Lisbon University Institute (IUL) in Portugal. He also possesses a Master of Science in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, a post-graduation diploma of advanced studies in African Studies, and a Bachelor (Hons) degree in Business Administration, both from ISCTE-Lisbon University Institute. Previously, he worked for the United Nations in Timor-Leste and Guyana. He also held positions at Deloitte Consulting and PricewaterhouseCoopers in Lisbon, Portugal. His research spans International Security Studies and Peace and Conflict Studies employing an objectivist and materialist approach. The research focuses on multilateral security institutions, external interventions, political instability and conflict. He has published on the African region, specifically on Angola, Somalia, the United Nations, the African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA), Neopatrimonialism, and Conflict Resolution.
