I am a physical geographer and received my PhD in soil science at the National Soil Resources Institute, Cranfield university, UK, in 2006. I am a Principal Researcher (CEEC), awarded by the National Science Foundation (FCT), at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. My research focuses on SOIL ORGANIC MATTER, how to manage it, and how it interacts with the wider environment. Specifically, I focus on how SOIL MANAGEMENT can improve ECOSYSTEM SERVICES, in particular elucidating positive as well as negative effects of biochar in soil, and identifying trade-offs in order to build a SUSTAINABLE BIOCHAR system. My discoveries exposed the marginal extent of on-farm benefits from increased SOC contents and SOM management in temperate England and Wales, revealed strong crop yield responses to biochar in the tropics, and quantified a substantial biochar improvement on the soil sponge function - and reduction in erosion - for Mediterranean soils at risk of desertification. I received the 2017 Research Day award from the University of Aveiro "in recognition of the significance and quality of the research developed at the UA". I was selected for the 2024 list of the World’s most influential scientists (top 2%) by Elsevier and Stanford University. In addition to research, I also worked for 5 years in scientific support for policy, which included leading a Scientific and Technical Report of the European Commission on biochar (cited 1,500 times), organising an "EU side-event" at the COP15 in Copenhagen, and facilitating a biochar discussion at the Bill & Melinda gates Foundation in Seattle, USA. Before my current position, I was awarded two postdoc fellowships by the FCT (Aveiro University), I was a grantholder at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, a peatland project postdoc at Queen Mary University of London, and a soil monitoring project postdoc at Cranfield University UK. I am the Portuguese lead for one international project on soil organic carbon sequestration, the leader of a Portuguese project on biochar and the soil sponge function, the co-PI of a Portuguese Project on biochar and pollinators, the Co-PI of an international project on sustainably improving soil-plant-biota interactions in a Mediterranean sown pasture, and the Aveiro lead of a Portuguese project on using biochar to restore degraded olive orchard soils. Here we brought together leading scientists from across the world to present their latest results. A total of 85 oral and poster presentations were made, constituting the third largest session at the conference after the classical sessions on soil erosion and soil organic matter. (2012 - 2012)

It was a well-attended event, chaired by Luca Montanarella (JRC) with presentations by Johannes Lehmann (Cornell University), Saran Sohi (University of Edinburgh), and me. 2017/10/03 The aim of this thesis was to improve understanding of the role of organic inputs and soil organic matter (SOM) for crop production in contemporary arable farming in Europe. For this purpose, long-term experiments were analysed on the additional yield effect of organic inputs and savings in mineral fertiliser. In addition, a farm survey was conducted to find drivers and barriers for the use of organic inputs and to assess if arable farmers in Europe perceive a deficiency of SOM.

2024/02/01 - Current Advisory Board member of The Earth Rover Programme (https://www.earthroverprogram.org/). Earth Rover Program is a new not-for-profit organisation established in November 2023. This is a major initiative supported by Bezos Earth Fund until 2026 (4M$), during which we will benchmark and image soils, improving understanding of their properties on sites around the world.

2017 - 2022/12/31 I joined the International Biochar Initiative's new and independent Scientific Committee whose mission is to "critically assess and synthesize the scientific literature regarding the interactions between biochar and soils, the wider environment, and human health, and to provide an interface between science and the general public where the science is explained in a transparent and balanced way using broadly accessible language". The Science Committee is made up of 16 scientists from across the world.

2012/03 - 2017/02 COST Action TD1107 Biochar as option for sustainable resource management. I was the national representative of Portugal, and WG2 'land-use management' leader. The Action aimed to connect scattered European Biochar research to enable quick implementation of intelligent material flow management systems, to maintain or improve soil quality while efficiently sequestering carbon in the long-term. The Action aimed at coordinating European Biochar research, bringing together researchers, stakeholders and potential users from EU and candidate countries.

2013/06/22 The Expresso newspaper is the leading Portuguese newspaper regarding scientific issues (also called a "reference" newspaper). In 2013 they published a full-width article resulting from their reporter Virgilio Azevedo interviewing me and my colleague Ana Catarina Bastos about our biochar work. The piece is titled "O Milagro da Terra Preta do Indio" and details our experimental work to improve infiltration and water storage in vineyard soils, while storing carbon, by incorporating biochar into the soil.
