I obtained my Masters in Veterinary Medicine (2010) and PhD in Veterinary Science (2017) from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon. My PhD studies were developed under the supervision of Professor Carlos Fontes and focused on the characterization of protein-protein interactions responsible for the assembly of R. flavefaciens’ cellulosome, a highly cellulolytic multi-enzymatic complex secreted in the rumen. During this time, I had the opportunity to conduct research at several national and international institutes, including the University of Newcastle, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, and the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, as well as collaborate with groups from FCT-Nova, the Weizmann Institute of Technology, and Queen's University. In 2018, I started as a postdoctoral research associate at the YSBL (University of York) in the group of Prof. Gideon Davies as part of an ERC funded project. My main work concerned the development of activity-based probes and inhibitors for heparanase, a glycoside hydrolase involved in cancer metastasis, neovascularization, and inflammation. There, I also worked on the functional and structural characterization of a novel divergent sialidase, the structural characterization of Siglecs (which are potential immune checkpoint targets), and the attempt to solve the structure of a full size cellulosome by cryo-EM. My work in York resulted in two high impact publications and provided me with the grounds to pursue scientific independence in the field of Glycobiology. In 2019, I took on the challenge of leading the Glycobiology and Structural Enzymology Lab at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and have since focused on strengthening the lab’s research team and securing external funding. I have recently secured funding from several sources, including an ERDF grant (873.673,00€) for the development of new CAZymes with biomedical applications, a Gilead Génese grant (30.000,00€) for the development of a new therapeutic approach for triple negative breast cancer, and an FCT exploratory grant (49.375,00€) for the development of a new treatment strategy for feline mammary carcinoma, for which I was also awarded the highly competitive "la Caixa" Junior Leader Fellowship (305.100,00€). Currently, I lead a team of 6 researchers who are working on various projects, including the characterization of novel CAZymes and cellulosomal proteins and the development of new glycan-based technologies such as cancer immunotherapies, biofilm dispersion and feed additives for algae-based diets. I am also involved in teaching activities in the subjects of Molecular and Cell Biology, Biophysics, Animal Nutrition and Plant Biology. My path so far has led to a high level of scientific maturity and a solid base of knowledge, as revealed by my h-index of 13 (Google Scholar) and track record of 38 publications: 36 international peer-reviewed publications, 2 book chapters (first author in 11, senior corresponding author in 4), and 7 oral communications, including as an invited lecturer. These include 18 publications and 5 oral communications in the last 5 years. I am also supervising 3 PhD students and 2 MSc students, and co-supervising 2 PhD students. I have integrated the jury of a bachelor's report, two master's theses, and three PhD theses in both national and international institutions, and I have participated in 4 CIISA projects, 5 FCT projects and 1 ERC funded project. I am currently the principal investigator of a Portugal2020 project, a Gilead Génese project, an FCT exploratory project, and a “la Caixa” Junior Leader fellowship project.
