Rui A. Silva is currently a Junior Researcher at the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE) at the University of Minho , Portugal. He graduated (5 years pre-Bologna) in Civil Engineering in 2006 and obtained his Master’s degree in Civil Engineering (specialization in Structural Design and Geotechnics) in 2008 from the same institution. In 2013, he completed his PhD in Civil Engineering on the topic “Repair of Earth Constructions by means of Injection,” awarded by the University of Minho and KU Leuven (dual PHD degree). The relevance of his contribution in this area was recognized at the “Vernacular Heritage & Earthen Architecture” conference in 2013, where he received the “Best Paper Award” for the paper entitled “Experimental investigation on the repair of rammed earth by means of injection of mud grouts” He is interested in research related to the characterization, modeling, strengthening, repair, and durability of earth constructions, as well as the development of sustainable building materials based on geopolymers and construction and demolition wastes. He has participated in 11 research projects, serving as the Principal Investigator of the project “SafEarth – Seismic Protection of Earthen Construction Heritage” funded by FCT, and of the project “ClaySkin: Fire Behaviour of Straw-Clay Panels Used for Inside Wall Cladding of Existing Buildings,” funded with €5,000 through the Kickstart@ISISE program. The SafEarth project involved a total funding of €199,752, of which €85,416 was allocated to the University of Minho. He has participated in various conferences (national and international) and has been a guest speaker on earth Construction topics at several seminars and workshops. He has supervised 12 completed Master’s theses and 1 completed PhD thesis and is currently supervising 2 other PhD theses. He has coordinated submissions for individual funding applications for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, successfully securing funding for 3 PhD scholarships. He participated in the creation of the master’s program “European Masters in Earthen Architecture and Construction” and has prepared his application for the EMJM program in the last 2 editions. He has submitted several research project applications and coordinated applications with international partners. He serves as a reviewer for 14 international journals, was a member of the scientific committees for 9 scientific events, and has been involved in the organization of 7 scientific events. He has evaluated research projects for the Croatian Science Foundation. He has been involved in teaching, particularly in the unit “Restoration and Conservation of Materials” in the Advanced Masters in Structural Analysis of Monuments and Historical Constructions. He is the author of over 90 scientific publications, including 28 articles in indexed international journals, holds 1,003 Scopus citations, and has an h-index of 16. He has developed various international collaborations with other researchers in the field of earth construction, particularly within the RILEM committees he has been part of (274-TCE, BEC, MAE and PEM). Finally, he has participated in several consultancy projects dedicated to the inspection and intervention in historical heritage and the construction of new earthen buildings, being the author and co-author of 14 technical documents.
