I am a Senior Researcher at CBQF, Catholic University, and an Invited Assistant Professor at the same institution, leading the Biotech Innovation and Tech Transfer (BITT) Research Group. My expertise focuses on white biotechnology, particularly fermentation processes that use renewable carbon sources to produce value-added biomolecules and by-products. This research is pivotal for enhancing the future competitiveness of European industry, fostering a sustainable society and bioeconomy, and advancing bioindustries. My group is dedicated to developing and improving fermentation processes for industrial applications, identifying solutions for by-products, and creating disruptive applications for biomolecules in sectors such as cosmetics, skin care, pharmaceuticals, food, animal feed, and materials. We collaborate closely with companies at early stages of product development, ensuring market-driven innovation. Our work is deeply connected with European and international industries, promoting cross-sector partnerships. As a member of the Scientific Council (ESB, UCP) and Internal Engagement Task Force, I contribute to high-level academic and industry initiatives. Since 2018, I have been a European Projects Expert Evaluator for entities like Innovation Fund Denmark (IFD), INNOWWIDE, H2020 EC, Eureka Eurostars, EIT Food, EIT Health, and Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions. As Principal Investigator of scientific projects, I have led 20 international and national initiatives and contributed to the management and scientific coordination of the Alchemy PROJECT R&D+I, in collaboration with Amyris (USA). This project focuses on creating a biotechnology and circular economy center in Portugal, incorporating bioengineering, microbiology, and bioanalytical techniques to develop high-value molecules for various industries. Presently the group is in collaboration with Biorbis company. I have supervised 8 PhD students (5 completed, 3 ongoing), more than 17 Master’s students, as well as Erasmus/Science without Borders students and final-year undergraduate projects. I am the author of over 90 indexed manuscripts, with an h-index of 34 (Nov. 2024), and have contributed to 70 posters and abstracts at national and international conferences, delivered 23 invited oral presentations, 13 book chapters and hold 7 patents (2 provisional). My research focuses on the chemical and bioactivity characterization of compounds, the development of new ingredients for food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and materials industries, and the valorization of by-products using green, low-cost extraction processes. I am also involved in developing alternative fermentable sugars for biorefinery-based fermentation processes and building business models for ingredient commercialization in the food and cosmetics sectors. My special research interests include in vitro models for biological phenomena simulation, microbiome modulation, formulation testing, and exploring aging mechanisms.
