Catarina is on her doctoral journey at the Faculty of Pharmacy - Universidade de Lisboa, within the Central Nervous System, Blood and Peripheral Inflammation Laboratory headed by Professor Adelaide Fernandes. Her research focuses on the intricate immune (microglia-T cells) mechanisms involved in multiple sclerosis (MS)-associated cognitive impairment. Her scientific journey started during her master's studies, where she explored how blocking the action of an inflammatory molecule could prevent MS-associated pathogenesis using the MS in vivo model. From 2018 to 2021, Catarina continued her studies as a Research Fellow of the project Grant for Multiple Sclerosis Innovation (GMSI17) by Merck Serono to Professor Fernandes. During this time, she acquired a lot of expertise concerning in vivo handling, tissue preparation for immunohistochemistry, and gene and protein analysis. In 2021, she was awarded a PhD grant to understand the biological mechanisms underlying innate and adaptive immune interactions and their influence in disease pathology and progression. Her work involved developing a co-culture system using human microglia and T cell models, as well as pioneering a 3D brain spheroid model derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from healthy donors and MS patients. During these years, Catarina published 8 papers, three of which were as first author in high-impact journals as the Journal of Neuroinflammation. She presented her work as oral and poster presentations in multiple national and international meetings. She also participated in two educational programs organized by the European Committee for MS Research and was awarded a short-term EMBO for expertise acquisition in RNA sequencing analysis.
