Miguel Lino (ML) is a researcher at the University of Coimbra and affiliated with the Centre for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB). He has an MSc in Biomedical Engineering (IST, Technical University of Lisbon) and a PhD in Biosciences (University of Coimbra, 2017). ML has acquired strong expertise in different fields of knowledge: biomedical engineering, biology, biomaterials and nanotechnology. In his PhD and in the following years, ML made a significant contribution to the development of a cutting-edge research field in the lab of Dr Lino Ferreira, related to the creation of light-triggerable formulations for the intracellular delivery of biomolecules. The work gave origin to one international patent (PCT/IB2016/056229) and publications in prestigious nanotechnology journals (ACS Nano, Nanoscale), which have been highlighted by the national press. In his postdoctoral career, ML has worked on the development of sEV therapeutics for the treatment of cardiovascular/brain disorders, mainly focused on ischemic diseases and sEV targeting strategies. Several articles in high-impact journals (J. of Controlled Release, J. of Extracellular Vesicles, ACS Nano, Nanoscale) have already resulted from his contribution to this field. Overall, he published 20 articles in peer-reviewed journals (all in Q1; average IF>9.4). In the last 4 years, ML was able to increase his scientific independence. From 2020 until 2021, ML was an invited auxiliary researcher at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. Since 2021 he was able to secure: (i) a contract of junior researcher in the national call for Scientific Employment Stimulus (top 8%); (ii) funding as PI and co-PI for FCT exploratory projects (100k €) on sEV-based therapeutics; (iii) mobility grants to perform a collaborative project at Imperial College London. Over the years, he has supervised 2 PhD students, a team of 4 researchers (1 postdoc and 3 MSc fellows) dedicated to sEV therapies, 3 researchers (1 postdoc and 2 MSc fellows) working on sEVs to reverse cell senescence and he has mentored 6 visiting students/researchers. In the last years, he has built a network of contacts with international experts from top institutions: Dr Costanza Emanueli and Dr Césare Terracciano (Imperial College London), Dr Marina Resmini (Queen Mary University of London), Dr Tomas Sobrino (University of Santiago de Compostela), Dr Ana Teixeira (Karolinska Institute), Dr Diana Nascimento (i3S) and Dr Chiara Brovarone (Polytechnic University of Turin). Besides his research activities, he is an invited professor of the syllabus “Regenerative Medicine” of the MSc program in Biomedical Engineering (Univ. Coimbra) and has contributed with lectures for the PhD programme in Biomedicine and Experimental Biology (CNC-UC). From 2019 until 2023, he was the coordinator of the section “Cell Therapies and Tissue Engineering” of the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapies and since 2023 he is a member of the scientific council of the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing. His scientific contributions have been recognized at national and international levels: he has been invited to be a jury member in 7 MSc defences and 4 PhD defences; he gave talks at conferences/symposiums (6 by invitation, 1 keynote lecture); He received 5 poster awards at international conferences. He was invited to be an abstract reviewer for the 7th TERMIS World Congress and to become a review editor of Frontiers in Medical Engineering. He has acted as a reviewer for different journals (ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering; Cells).
