Rafael Neiva graduated in Biomedical Science with a minor in Molecular Biomedicine, from the University of Aveiro, and concluded his master's degree in Biochemistry at the University of Porto (FCUP/ICBAS), Portugal. Since the conclusion of his Master's degree he integrated Professor Paulo Correia-de-Sá's research group to pursue his research. The research developed, performed in the field of Neuropharmacology, focused on the differential role of methylprednisolone on neurotransmitters GABA and Glutamate release from isolated nerve terminals (synaptosomes) of the rat hippocampus. From September 2020 to March 2022, he worked as a researcher in the project "Unravelling the cellular and molecular cardiopulmonary benefits of DBH inhibition in animals with pulmonary arterial hypertension", funded by BIAL-Portela & Cª, SA, undergoing in Professor Paulo Correia-de-Sá's laboratory. For the past three years he is working on his PhD, furthering his research in pulmonary arterial hypertension. The research project, in the field of cardiac pharmacology, focused on the “Role of the purinome in the crosstalk between cardiomyocytes and fibroblasts underlying right ventricle remodeling in pulmonary arterial hypertension”.
