I hold a BSc in Physics (2007), an MSc in Physics of Advanced Materials (2009), and a PhD in Sciences (Physics) (2014) from the University of Minho. My research focuses on nanostructured thin film systems, developed using advanced PVD techniques, particularly for sensor technologies, biomedical devices, energy harvesting, and industrial applications. I have supervised 2 PhD candidates (1 ongoing), 8 MSc students (2 ongoing), and 5 undergraduate researchers, fostering their development in sensor applications and nanomaterial systems. Highlights include a PhD student under a Brazil-Portugal Sandwich protocol, focused on zigzag nanostructures for biomedical temperature sensing, and another in a non-academic FCT-funded project with Moldit Industries, advancing industrial thin-film sensors. As a PI and Co-PI, I have led high-impact projects such as Drivolution and PorCoating, integrating nanostructured thin films into automotive manufacturing and ceramics industries. I have actively contributed to the scientific community through the organization of events like the 78th IUVSTA Workshop, presentations at international conferences such as the E-MRS Spring Meeting, and guest editing for MDPI journals. My outreach includes engaging high school students in laboratory tours, seminars, and initiatives like the CanSat Competition, fostering STEM education. Beyond academia, I co-founded CoatiT Lda, a spin-off focused on decorative and sensing coatings, reflecting my commitment to bridging academic research and industry. My work is recognized in thin film technologies and sensor development for its impactful research and innovation. It has broad industrial applications, driving the advancement of advanced sensors for physical parameters such as temperature, pressure, and humidity. Furthermore, it opens new possibilities for thermomagnetic thin films designed for energy harvesting, offering transformative solutions across multiple sectors.
