Diana Cunha-Reis (DCR) is currently a Researcher (Junior Researcher contract, PI/group leader) at Biosystems and Integrative Sciences Institute (BioISI) and Departamento Biologia (DB), Faculty of Sciences, Univ. Lisbon (FCUL), Portugal. She graduated in Biochemistry in 1999 at FCUL and completed her PhD in Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience Specialty at the Faculty of Medicine, Univ. Lisbon (FMUL), Portugal in 2007 with studies on modulation of hippocampal neurotransmission by VIP and adenosine. During her PhD, she was a visiting fellow at Rudolph-Boehm Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Medicine, Univ. Leipzig studying patch-clamp in hippocampal interneurons and Swammerdam Institute for Neurobiology, Faculty of Biology, Univ. Amsterdam, studying neurotransmitter release mechanisms. From 2007 to 2010 DCR was a Neuroscience postdoctoral research fellow at Instituto de Medicina Molecular (IMM), FMUL, Portugal. She obtained her first FCT-funded project as PI in 2009 to study VIP receptors in hippocampal dependent cognition and synaptic plasticity. From January 2012 to December 2017 DCR was a postdoctoral research fellow at Centro de Química e Bioquímica, FCUL, IMM and Clínica Universitária de Neurologia, FMUL, studying therapeutic opportunities for preventing epileptogenesis, cognitive decline and sudden death in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). From 2019-2022 she was PI of an FCT-project studying neuronal membrane and lipid raft remodelling in MTLE. From September 2012 to September 2014, DCR was Invited Assistant Professor (course responsible) in Physiology (Nutrition BSc degree) and Human Physiology at Univ. Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias, Lisbon, Portugal. From September 2019 to November 2022 DCR was Secretary of the Portuguese Physiological Society. From September 2019 to July 2021, she was also a Physiology lecturer and course responsible, Biochemistry BSc, FCUL. From January to December 2023, she was PI of a BioISI/FCT funded project investigating altered lipid raft dynamics following seizures at hippocampal synapses using AFM and microscopy techniques. DCR was evaluator and reporter of the 2019-2024 calls of the Marie Sklodowska Curie (MSCA) European Global Fellowships H2020 / Horizon Europe, the 2013-2014 calls (FP7 and H2020 European commission programs) of the MSCA Initial Training Networks (ITN) and of the 2024 call for Fellowships for Excellent Researchers R2-R4, Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic. DCR is editorial board member of Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience, Exploration of Neuroprotective Therapy and Neuromarkers. She additionally edited 2 Special Issues in Frontiers in Cellular Neurosciences and Biomedicines. She supervised 9 MSc students, 1 PhD student, 4 graduate research fellows, 5 postdoctoral researchers under FCT-funded projects, 4 Erasmus+ internships and over 10 voluntary researchers. She currently supervises 3MSc students. In the last five years (2019-2024) DCR published 18 abstracts in proceedings of scientific meetings, 7 original research papers as last author (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024) and 3 review/editorial papers as first and corresponding author (2020, 2021, 2023) in international journals, 7 of the first quartile in at least one of the following areas Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Biomedicine or Biology. Finally, DCR further co-authored 10 scientific communications to national or international meetings. Her current research is focused on: 1) The value of VPAC1 VIP receptor antagonists in reversing the plastic changes following seizures in vitro and its contributions to the epileptogenesis process in TLE; 2) Cognitive rescue in TLE and aging using novelty training strategies and VIP receptor ligands; 3) the changes in membrane lipid composition and lipid raft dynamics in TLE and the ability of the ketogenic diet therapy to reverse them and 4) The role of synaptic remodeling in cognitive decline upon aging.
