Dr. Hintelmann’s research focuses on the speciation and fate of metals in the environment. His group is exploring the use of stable isotopes to unravel the biogeochemical cycling of mercury employing ICP/MS techniques. Currently, he is involved in a number of field studies, covering diverse ecosystems from polar systems to the Amazon, including whole ecosystem experiments such as METAALICUS, LENS and wetland restoration projects in the San Francisco Bay area. He recently started to investigate the fractionation of heavy elements in the environment, whereby the determination of Hg isotope fingerprints holds great potential to track mercury from pollution sources to environmental receptor sites. His laboratory is currently one of the few with the expertise to measure highly toxic dimethylmercury in environmental samples. Recently, it also developed a novel DGT (Diffusive Gradient in Thin film) based method to determine bioavailable MeHg and nanosilver particles in aqueous systems. We characterized specific environmental processes causing Hg isotope fractionation (reduction, methylation, volatilization, precipitation) using multicollector-ICP/MS. This research has great potential tool to track Hg source receptor-relationships and to differentiate between natural and anthropogenic sources of Hg in the environment. Currently, we conduct field studies in polar regions, both in the Arctic and the Antarctic. My laboratory has pioneered the use of enriched stable Hg isotopes for environmental studies. This powerful technique has replaced traditional radioisotope techniques and is now widely accepted as the most elegant technology for studying Hg species transformation and transfer processes. Current research focuses on uptake and translocation of mercury species in rice and other food crops.
