Azar Mohammadpanah is an architect and Ph.D. candidate at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP) since 2020. Her doctoral research, titled “Toward a Local Solution for a Universal Question: Water-Level Rise in Historic Waterfronts and Adaptive Urban Public Spaces”, addresses contemporary challenges in heritage conservation in waterfront cities in the context of climate change. The thesis is supported by a doctoral fellowship (2022/09/30–Ongoing) from Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal. She holds a Master’s Degree in Architectural Design and History from the Polytechnic of Milan (Polo Territoriale di Mantova, 2019), where she developed a strong foundation in architectural heritage and urban studies. Her primary research interests include the preservation and rehabilitation of architectural and urban heritage, the relationship between public and private spaces, and the sustainable transformation of urban residential areas. She is also contributing to the “Well-Balanced Energy Housing” (WellBEH) project: Reasoning Method towards Interventions Crossing Heritage, Efficiency, and Comfort (2023.11189.PEX), under the supervision of Professors Rui Póvoas and Luciana Rocha at CEAU: Centro de Estudos de Arquitetura e Urbanismo, FAUP. Previously, Azar served as a research fellow in the “Housing Think Tank: Knowledge Integration on Multi-family Residential Buildings” (HoTT) at CEAU, where she worked under the supervision of Professors Rui Ramos and Gisela Lameira. Her contributions in this role involved addressing housing practices and policies in urban contexts and exploring innovative approaches to urban residential transformations. Her academic work reflects a commitment to exploring the intersections of architectural heritage, urban sustainability, and contemporary challenges such as climate change. Her broader research interests include the preservation of modern architectural heritage and the rehabilitation of waterfront urban areas, with a focus on balancing historical preservation and modern interventions.
