Catarina Gonçalves holds a Diploma (2004) in Chemical Engineering, from Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto and a PhD degree (2010) in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minho. She joined INL in 2016, as a research fellow, and since 2018 she is a Staff Researcher in the Food Processing and Nutrition Group. In 2018, Catarina was granted with a research project (240K€), co-funded by FCT and the ERDF through COMPETE2020 to develop a modular micro-device for the simulation of the human gastrointestinal tract. Catarina is also working on the risk assessment of engineered nanomaterials, performing tests on in vitro digestion and evaluating biological responses in the human intestine using cell-based models (cell lines or organoids). She is currently involved in several research projects. One of the European projects is an Open Innovation Test Bed initiative from the EU Commission, named Safe-n-Medtech, towards up-scaling the use of nanotechnologies. The project focuses on the preclinical testing of nanotechnology-based medical and diagnosis devices. She supervised 6 students (2 PhD and 4 MSc) and at this moment she is the supervisor of 2 MSc students. She authored 32 scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals, published 3 book chapters and participated in 27 conferences (oral and poster contributions).
