I am a cell biologist (PhD in cell biology) with extensive expertise in microbiology, host-pathogen interaction, and advanced microscopy approaches. I have over 15 years’ experience in scientific project design/management, undergraduate and postgraduate supervision and writing/communication of scientific information to both expert and non-expert audiences. To attest to this, I am lead author in several high profile publications with over 3000 citations. I have supervised MSc and PhD students and postdoctoral scientists. I teach both at the national (e.g. co-coordinator of the Host Responses to Microbial Infection module of the MolBios PhD program) and international level (e.g. EMBL Advanced fluorescence imaging techniques). I have been actively involved in several outreach (e.g. In2Science, ITQB NOVA - open day) and citizen science initiatives (e.g. initiated the project MicroMundo@Oeiras). I have served in several decision boards in Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA), University College London (UCL) and the Francis Crick Institute (FCI) where I have worked with academic, industrial and political partners to define scientific and institutional vision and impact strategies (e.g. Mostmicro directive board). From 2021-2024 I was an invited member of the Young Scientists Seminar from the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. I have contributed to the development of my research institution and peers through leadership roles in research facilities, such as the Bacterial Imaging Cluster, and personal development initiatives, such as the ITQB NOVA and NMS mentorship program. I am actively involved in peer-review of manuscripts for several journals and I am a member of several evaluation panels for grants and fellowships at several levels (e.g. La Caixa Foundation, FWO or the European Research Executive Agency). Experiences that have provided me with a comprehensive view about research and the scientific endeavour. From a research point of view I have made significant contributions in the fields of Staphylococcus aureus cell biology (e.g. discovering a link between peptidoglycan and wall teichoic acids biosynthesis), host-pathogen interaction (e.g. importance of autolysins for immune evasion, or the role of septins in the recognition of intracellular pathogens), hardware, software and probe based technological innovations for microscopy (e.g. NanoJ-Fluidics, NanoJ-SRRF and Super-Beacons, respectively). I was awarded a “La Caixa” Junior Leader Fellowship, a FCT project grant and a ”Maratona da Saúde” award to develop my independent research project in Portugal. Since October 1st 2021 I have my own research group at ITQB NOVA, Intracellular Microbial Infection Biology (IMIB) laboratory . At the Intracellular Microbial Infection Biology (IMIB) laboratory we are interested in understanding the dynamics of the interaction between mammalian host cells and facultative intracellular bacterial pathogens using a combination of advanced microscopy approaches, organ-on-chip 3D cell system and classical cell biology and biochemistry approaches.
