In particular, I have a special interest in the development and study of new solvents such as ionic liquids and more recently eutectic solvents and in their application in the development of more sustainable processes and products, through their integration into the Circular Economy, with a view to implementation of a sustainable development model. While solvents are ubiquitous in chemical processes, they are also a major contributor to industrial waste streams. Although the focus of the chemical process is the solute and not the solvent, solvents are used abundantly in almost all industries. Consequently, solvents represent a huge economic market. Modern industrial chemistry, together with the implementation of stricter regulations regarding the safety and health of solvents, are revolutionizing the solvent scenario at the industrial level, requiring cleaner and more efficient solvents that are less toxic and that lead to more sustainable processes. Thus, green and sustainable solvents are a cornerstone of modern chemical engineering and their development and characterization is of utmost importance.
