Francisca Cazaux Mateus completed a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry in 2020 from the University of Aveiro achieving a grade of 16 out of 20. Subsequently, she pursued a Master's degree in Molecular Biomedicine at the same university, graduating in 2022 with a grade of 18 out of 20. Her Master's thesis conducted at the Institute of Molecular Biomedicine from University of Aveiro (iBiMED), under the supervision of Prof. Bruno de Jesus focused on evaluating transcriptional changes during the transition between different pluripotent states in mouse embryonic stem cells. She authored a review article in Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal (IF: 6.15 ) within the framework of her Master's research topic. During her Master's Francisca applied and was awarded a research initiation fellowship to complete her dissertation work. During this period, she briefly collaborated with Prof. Simão Rocha's lab, where she gained expertise in methylation analyses. In early 2023, she successfully applied and was selected to join a funded project by the European Angelman Syndrome Alliance as a research fellow at the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB), Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of University of Lisbon. Her work focused on developing stem cell-based disease models of Angelman syndrome. D uring her research fellowship, she co-authored a review article titled "Stem cell models of Angelman syndrome" in Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology (IF: 5.5). She is currently finalizing a manuscript detailing a series of iPSCs derived from individuals with Angelman syndrome and corresponding healthy controls for disease modeling, intended for submission to Human Cell (IF: 3.97). Recently, she applied for a second research fellowship and was chosen to work under the X-HUMAN project funded by FCT at the same lab, where she is currently working with a CRISPR interference toolkit in human embryonic stem cells to knockdown putative regulators of XCI. Throughout her career, she regularly presented her work internally in Prof. Bruno de Jesus and at Prof. Simão Rocha labs on multiple times. She also presented her research to a wider scientific community through oral and poster presentations at various conferences and events: oral presentation at SCERG Seminar in Nov. 2023, poster at the IBB meeting in Nov. 2023, poster at the SPCE-ETRS Joint Annual Meeting in Oct. 2023, poster at the iBiMED poster sessions in Nov. 2022 and another poster in the XI Biochemistry Day in May 2019. Moreover, she participated in several events and was a semifinalist at Angelini University Award 20/21- 'Soluções de Crises em Saúde - identificar, gerir e cuidar''. Additionally, she has actively engaged in outreach activities organized by Angel - Associação Síndrome de Angelman Portugal and has also been at FCUL to lecture her research to MSc students from the biology of the development course. She also volunteered for various associations, including Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro, Lions Clube de Vagos, Comissão de Apoio Social e Desenvolvimento de Santa Catarina, and the Academia de Verão at the University of Aveiro.
