Vasco Martins concluded the Master's degree in Bioengineering - Molecular Bioengineering in 07/2024 and the Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering in 07/2021 both at the Faculty of Engineering/School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto. Vasco developped his Master's dissertation at the Mitochondria and Neurobiology research laboratoty at UCIBIO-FFUP (Applied Molecular Biosciences Unit - Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto) under the supervision of Prof. Jorge Ascenção Oliveira (PharmD, PhD, EuCP) and Brígida Pinho (PhD) with a final classification of 19/20. His research work was focused on studying novel therapeutical approaches to the mitochondrial disorder Neuropathy, Ataxia, Retinitis Pigmentosa (NARP). He validated a heteroplasmic cellular model of NARP disease, and conducted an investigation into the therapeutic potential of pharmacologically targeting deubiquitinases as a disease-modifying strategy for this pathology. In 2020, Vasco enrolled in an extracurricular internship at the Cell Division and Genomic Stability at i3S (Institute for Research and Innovation in Health) where he was involved in the study of fundamental mechanisms of the mitotic spindle orientation. In 2022, he has also enrolled in an internship at the Mitochondria and Neurobiology research laboratoty at UCIBIO-FFUP, where he studied the impact of proteostasis mechanisms and stress responses on striatal vulnerability in Huntington’s disease. During this internship as well as his Master's dissertation, his worked has resulted in four oral communication in scientific congresses, two of which he was the presenter. Vasco has demonstrated a strong commitment to a scientific career by actively engaging in extracurricular activities, including participating in the "Experimental Design in Biomedical Research" workshop at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto. Additionally, he was part of the organizing committee for MitoPorto 2023, an international congress focused on mitochondrial research. Vasco is passionate about enhancing scientific communication with non-scientific communities. He founded "Associação BYSchool," a nonprofit organization based at the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, with the aim of improving science outreach and providing career guidance to younger generations.
