Rafael Sousa Santos

Rafael Sousa Santos is a PhD candidate at Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto since 2017, a Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia scholar, and a researcher at Center for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism in the Territory Dynamics and Morphologies group (CEAU-MDT). Between 2021 and 2022 he was a visiting researcher at Politecnico di Milano, where he collaborated in two courses of architectural design in the master's program in Architecture. During 2022 he was a visiting researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Fulbright scholar. He has participated as a reviewer and guest speaker at several institutions, such as the Università degli Studi di Palermo, Università degli Studi ¿Gabriele d'Annunzio¿ di Pescara, Politecnico di Milano, Ecole Nationale d'Architecture de Marrakech, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, or the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He regularly publishes and participates in conferences on topics such as design teaching, the role of freehand drawing, quantitative research methods, architectural history or urban planning. He edited the fifth issue of Dimensions ¿ Journal or Architectural Knowledge from the Technical University of Munich, ¿Collaborations: Rethinking Architectural Design¿ (2023), published by Transcript. Currently he is working as a research assistant in the research project Fishing Architecture, funded by the European Research Council, at CEAU-MDT.

The activities included visits to the University Centre of the Westfjords, the Marine and Freshwater Institute, and the local archive and library in Ísafjörður. 2023/09/12 - 2023/09/18	This BIP "Laboratorio de Arquitectura Popular: Redescubir el Mediterráneo" focused on the vernacular architecture of the Mediterranean and took place in Sicily. The purpose was to conduct fieldwork, primarily using freehand drawing, to document specific cases of vernacular architecture in various urban settlements on the island. The activities included guiding a working group during on-site activities, composed of students from the involved universities, participating in discussions with other tutors, and giving a lecture.
