I hold a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm (2001), where I have worked under the supervision of Thomas Perlmann. I have joined the laboratory of François Guillemot as postdoctoral researcher, initially at the Institute de Génétique et de Biologie Moléculaire et Cellulaire (IGBMC) in Strasbourg, and later at the MRC - National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in London. My research interests stand at cross roads between Neurosciences, Developmental Biology and Brain Cancer. I have established my own research group at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC) in 2011. Since 2020 I head the Stem Cells & Neurogenesis laboratory at i3S Institute for Research and Innovation in Health of the University of Porto. Work at my group is focused on transcriptional mechanisms that regulate neural stem cell maintenance and differentiation in the vertebrate embryo, and how these may be deployed in pathological conditions such as brain cancer. I have supervised 5 PhD students (3 completed, 2 ongoing) and 8 MSc students (7 completed, 1 ongoing). From 2018 to 2021, I was president of the board of the Portuguese Society for Developmental Biology (SPBD). My lab is currently funded by FCT grant 2022.05447.PTDC (until 31 Decembre 2024) and New Frontiers in Research Fund NFRFT-2022-00327 (from the Canadian Tri-Agency) running until 2029.
