Fátima Macedo (https://www.webofscience.com/wos/author/record/L-4623-2013) is a team leader at Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde (i3S) in Porto, Portugal, the largest heath research institute in Portugal. Fátima Macedo received a PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2006, a master's degree in Immunology in 1999 and a BSc degree in Biology in 1996, all from University of Porto, Portugal. During her PhD and Masters degree she was a visiting student at Harvard University, Boston and Loyola University in Chicago, USA respectively. Her doctorate focused on T-lymphocyte biology in the context of iron overload. In this context, she addressed different diseases of iron overload with a genetic cause including Hemochromatosis. After her PhD, she developed an interest in a population of T lymphocytes that recognize lipids (CD1-restricted T lymphocytes). For more than 12 years, Fátima has been working on lipid specific T lymphocytes in Lysosomal Storage Diseases, mainly sphingolipidoses. Her research team focus is understanding the role of sphingolipids for the modulation of CD1 restricted T lymphocytes, including Natural Killer T cells, and understanding the role of this modulation in different pathological conditions including sphingolipidoses like Acid Sphingomyelinase Deficiency, Gaucher and Fabry diseases. Fatima Macedo established a line of research that joins the CD1 and LSD fields that has been recognised nationally and internationally, as illustrated by establishing relevant collaborations with international leaders in the field of CD1-restricted T cells and with clinicians of National and International Reference Centers for Hereditary Metabolic Diseases, illustrated by joint publications and successfully attracting national and international funding. Fatima successful graduated 19 MSc and 3 PhD students, and supervised 2 postdoc researchers. She published 31 papers including publications on the Molecular Genetic and Metabolism Journal, the official journal of the Society for Inherited Metabolic Disorders, as well as publications on Nature Immunology and The European Journal of Immunology. Fatima Macedo has received invitations for plenary talks and her work has received several awards including The Gaucher Generation Award and awards from the Portuguese Society of Metabolic Diseases. Along with her scientific carrear Fátima Macedo has 20 years experience in teaching in higher education institutions, being responsible for Immunology and Human pathology courses at Aveiro University, Portugal.
