Dr Antonio J. Paleo holds his PhD in December 2012 at the Group of Polymers, Physics Department from University of A Coruña (Spain) with a thesis titled: A study of the physical properties of carbon nanofiber reinforced polypropylene composites. As main conclusion, his PhD has furthered him expertise within the field of conductive polymer composites (CPC), consisting of conductive fillers and insulating polymers, as promising smart materials with remarkable interest in both industry and academia. He gained further skills in another application closely related with CPC, commonly referred to as positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect, thanks to his first postdoc contract at the School of Engineering and Science of Queen Mary University of London (UK), under supervision of Dr. Emiliano Bilotti in collaboration with the company Ltd. Thermosafe (Haverhill, UK). This experience allowed him to know better the interface between pure academic and market oriented research. Currently, he is leading research focused on the fabrication and characterization of textile-based energy storage and harvesting systems at the Center for Textile Science and Technology of the University of Minho since February 2016. In the context of this current position, he joined several short scientific missions at the Institute of Advanced Technologies for Energy Nicola Giordano (CNR-ITAE, Messina, Italy), under supervision of Dr. Francesco Lufrano and Dr. Pietro Staiti, and and one short scientific stay at the Center for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials (CiQUS) from Universidad de Santiago de Compostela (Spain), under supervision of Prof. María Giménez. Thanks to these scientific short research stays, he gained introductory skills in the preparation and electrochemical characterization of cotton-based electrodes based on activated carbon and different metal oxides for their utilization in asymmetric solid-state supercapacitors. In addition, he is also leading the investigation on the effect of commercial vapour grown carbon nanofibers on the thermoelectric properties of polymer composites and textile fabrics. The main aim is to explore their potential as wearable energy harvesting devices from the temperature gradient between human body and surroundings. He is author/co-author of 33 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals (ISI database), one book chapter, and more than 25 presentations in internationally established conferences with an h index of 12, which corresponds to 537 citations ( Scopus).
