Joana Tavares obtained a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2003 from the University of Porto (UP), Portugal. After 4 years of research (2005-2008) working on target-based drug discovery against Leishmania at the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC) and at the Institut de Recherche pour le Development (IRD) in Montpellier, France, she obtained a PhD degree in Biochemistry by the UP. She was an instructor at the Biochemistry Department (2003-2007) and invited assistant at 50% of Immunology (2007-2011) at the Faculty of Pharmacy, UP. From 2009 to 2013, she conducted postdoctoral research at the Malaria Biology and Genetics Unit of Pasteur Institute in Paris, France to study the malaria pre-erythrocytic phase using live imaging in rodent models. Tavares joined the IBMC, now integrated into the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), end-2013 as an FCT investigator and pioneered a research line focused on Plasmodium and the use of live imaging in rodents. Her expertise in deciphering host-parasite interactions by engineering and studying transgenic parasites phenotype and live imaging was expanded to Leishmania, T. brucei, and T. cruzi in the context of collaborative projects at i3S. From September 2021, she became a group leader at i3S to study the molecular mechanisms involved in the completion of the malaria parasite journey that starts in the skin and ends in the liver and contribute to prevention-targeted interventions. From 2021 she is invited assistant Faculty of Pharmacy, UP. She co-authored a total of 57 publications in journals gathering over 1552 citations. h-index 22 (Scopus). She successfully supervised several MSc, PhD and Post-doctoral fellows; has been PI in several competitive funded grants; was co-inventor of two patents and received in 2014 the L¿Oreal UNESCO Portugal Medal of Honor for Women in Science. J Tavares currently serves at i3S as a member of the Organ Responsible for Animal Welfare and Ethics Review Body (ORBEA), Biosafety Committee and External Seminars Organizer Committee.
