Hélder Carvalhal is a postdoctoral research associate at the Department of Economics of the University of Manchester (UK) within the project 'Measuring the Great Divergence: a study of global standards of living, 1500-1950'. He is also tutor/lecturer at the same department. He has a PhD in Early Modern History (2022) by the PIUDHist Doctoral Programme (Évora and Lisbon). His main research interests lie on the field of global economic and social history since 1500, with an emphasis on the topics of gender, labour, living standards, and military history. He has been involved in several international research projects, both as research assistant and research fellow. Among other publications, he co-edited the book 'The First World Empire. Portugal, War and Military Revolution' (Routledge, 2021), and has published in venues such as Gender & History, European Review of Economic History, Revista de Historia Económica / Journal of Iberian and Latin American Economic History, and the American Journal of Human Biology. He is Co-Editor of Continuity and Change (0268-4160).
