Joana Carrilho (female) holds a PhD. in Biomedical Sciences, preceded by a BSc. in Aquatic Sciences (Applied Biology), both from the University of Porto. Between the years of 2002 and 2013, she was uninterruptedly linked to scientific research in the field of genetics, having received several awards in international conferences for the best presentation and best poster. Along with scientific growth, she has also developed teaching and communication skills, being a certified trainer and facilitator in Innovation (FORTH methodology) specially in the field of Health, and an awarded mentor in debate and public speaking. Previously to her position at the University of Porto, she worked as a consultant for the internationalization, management and planning of international projects and submission of H2020 and other funding schemes’ proposals. Recently, she worked in innovation as a tech transfer officer and as the manager of several entrepreneurship programs. She has also managed programs in policy improvement through the sharing of good practices between European countries. Currently, she is responsible for the management of several international projects in which the Competence Center in Active and Healthy Ageing participates, namely the coordination of the INNOV4LIFE project (Cross-Border Living Lab in Digital Health), and the management of the EIT Health Hub U.Porto, among others. Academically, she is a researcher in CINTESIS@RISE (as part of the Competence Center in Healthy and Active Ageing), and her main areas of research are the development of Collaborative Innovation Ecosystems in Digital Health; Open Innovation and Real-World Technology Validation; Health Technology Adoption and Adherence; and the development of Climate Resilient Smart Healthy Age-Friendly Environments. Finally, she is also engaged in teaching a course in Digital Health, a partnership between the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Biomedical Sciences Institute of U.Porto, which was awarded for Excellence in Pedagogical Innovation. Since 2025, she is also the Head of Strategy of ADOPTDIGI2CARE, a spin-off of the University of Porto dedicated to research, development, and capacity-building for professionals and organisations, in the field of digital health. In this capacity she is responsible for the outline of new R&D projects focused on Digital Health Technologies development and adoption.
