Dr. R.F. Pires has a solid background in Chemistry from FCT/UNL (Applied Chemistry degree and Bioorganic Chemistry Master degree). She concluded her PhD in Bioengineering, under the MIT Portugal Program at IST/UL with Distinction and Honour. The PhD work focused on the synthesis and characterization of novel jelly dye-sensitized donor acceptor dendrimers, with photodiode like behaviour, for energy applications. Having a strong background in sustainable synthesis and modification of polymers, in 2022 Dr. Pires joined CeFEMA (center of physics and engineering of advanced materials), where she has been working on the development of modified polymeric membranes for artificial organs, such as kidneys and lungs. Extracting the potential of her robust background in sustainable synthesis and modification of polymers, she has designed and developed biocompatible polymeric membranes that efficiently remove toxins from human blood and enhance gas permeation. Besides her scientific research, Dr. Pires is highly enroled in participation of different activities for science divulgation for the general public (e.g. European Researchers Night, Open Laboratories of the Chemistry Department of IST/UL and different commemorative activities regarding the 150th anniversary of the Periodic Table promoted by IST/UL).Since 2023, Dr. Pires is also member of the Lisbon Delegation of the Portuguese Chemical Society. Overall, Dr. Pires has amassed a diverse set of research skills, specializing in green techniques for synthesizing and modifying complex polymer architectures. Her numerous publications (19 publications in peer reviewd journals, 1 publication in a national perr-reviewed journal, 1 portuguese patent approved, 2 portuguese patents pending, 1 book chapter and numerous poster and oral communications) and accomplishments in the field stand as a testament to her dedication and expertise.
