Pedro Monterroso (PM, ORCID: 0000-0002-7911-3651) is an Auxiliar Researcher affiliated with CIBIO-InBIO, University of Porto. PM completed his BSc degree in 2002 specializing in applied animal biology. In 2006, he obtained a MSc in 2006 in biodiversity and genetic resources, followed by a PhD in 2012. His doctoral dissertation, titled "Ecological Interactions and Species Coexistence in Iberian Mesocarnivore Communities," showcased his expertise in understanding complex ecological dynamics. PM serves as the group leader of the Wildlife Conservation Ecology Research Group at the Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources (CIBIO) under the BIOPOLIS Program at the University of Porto, Portugal. He has authored 44 peer-reviewed papers, seven book chapters and one book, amassing over 1800 citations with an H-index of 20. PM has successfully supervised the research of two PhD and 20 MSc candidates, and is currently supervising four PhD students. Driven by a passion for interdisciplinary collaboration, PM maintains an active international network of collaborations, fostering a robust scientific community dedicated to wildlife conservation. He has co-taught advanced courses on "Conservation of Wildlife Populations" and two editions of the "Statistical Applications for Quantitative Population Ecology" courses at CIBIO-InBIO. PM is a member of the IUCN/SSC Cat Specialist Group, the Spanish Society for the Study and Conservation of Mammals, and the American Society of Mammologists. He also served as a guest editor for the special issue "Research in Carnivores: From their Interspecific Relationships to their Prey" in the journal "Diversity" and contributes as a reviewer for over ten scientific journals. PM's research is guided by a profound commitment to the coexistence of humanity and nature, encapsulated in the "one earth" vision. His work delves into the intricate interplay between human and wildlife habitats, exploring how land use practices, climate change, and deforestation shape biodiversity patterns and influence human-wildlife relationships. His research employs cutting-edge technologies, molecular methods, and cross-disciplinary approaches to unravel the mechanisms governing spatial and temporal biodiversity patterns and the structure of wildlife communities. Currently, his research is concentrated on the African tropics, with a particular emphasis on remote and rural areas, seeking to address pressing ecological challenges and provide quantitative solutions for sustainable conservation efforts. In 2022, PM embarked on a new chapter in his career by joining African Parks. Presently, he holds the position of Park Manager at Iona National Park in Angola. Despite his demanding role in conservation management, PM remains committed to research, allocating 20% of his time to advancing scientific inquiry alongside his responsibilities in park management.
