In 2016, I became a Biomedical Engineer in University of Minho, which included a dissertation, developed at Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB), entitled "Antisense Therapy: a new strategy to control Candida infections". During this period, I had the opportunity to develop skills in the field of antisense therapy and virulence factors of Candida species. In 2021, I finished my PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering in CEB-UM and in the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy (FKF) of the University of Southern Denmark and focused on "Application of antisense oligonucleotides to prevent Candida albicans infections". The main goal was to develop a novel therapeutic approach based on Antisense Therapy to track C. albicans filamentation employing established and emerging generation of NAMs. I had the opportunity to test in vivo these antisense oligomers using the Galleria mellonella model, being a more realistic approach towards the NAMs effect on C. albicans infections. In the five years since commencing my PhD, I published eight papers in peer-reviewed international journals (five as first author and three as co-author), seven of which are in Q1 in the areas of infectious diseases, nanotechnology, and biomaterials. During this time, I was also invited as speaker to present my work on four national conferences. Additionally, I had the opportunity to participate in another four international scientific events and one national events with posters modality. Besides this, I was involved in a financed research FCT-project as a Team member (FCT/POCI-01-0145-FEDER-028893 - Antisen4CandiB - Application of antisense oligomers for controlling Candida species biofilm formation on medical surfaces). During my scientific journey I have also actively collaborated with national and international researchers, in the field of: antisense technology (Dr. Jesper Wengel, Denmark); nanotechnology for drug delivery (Dr. Bruno Silva, Portugal and Dr. Zlatan Denchev, Portugal); Galleria mellonella model (Dr. Dalila Mil-Homens, Portugal) and mouse model (Dr. Lorena Cussó, Spain). As I sought to establish active relationships with pharmaceutical companies, my path innovation also resulted in an international patent [WO 2020/174366 A1]. In July 2022, I was awarded a 10-month research fellowship at INIAV in the "FLUDS" project led by Dr Carina Almeida, which was a great opportunity to develop new skills. In December 2023, I was awarded a research fellowship at INIAV in the "BioFago" project led by Dr Carina Almeida, focusing on the development of new strategies to combat fire blight. Recently, I have a position as an invited researcher at the Centre of Biological Engineering in the project "BioFago" led by Dr. Hugo Oliveira. I have established a network of collaborations with veterinary hospitals and clinics in the north of Portugal and started an epidemiological study related to sick cats and dogs and I am also responsible for the creation of a new laboratory at INIAV for in vivo testing with the Galleria mellonella model (serving as Deputy Director of the Galleria Laboratory). Very soon, I will start a new position at INIAV, since I was awarded a 6-year position by FCT in the Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus in 2023.
