Monica M Sousa graduated in Biochemistry and holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Porto. During her PhD she studied the biology of an aggregation-prone protein that induces axon degeneration. As a postdoctoral fellow, Monica worked at Columbia University- New York, where she studied signaling cascades mediating neurodegeneration caused by amyloid fibrils. Since 2008, Monica leads the Nerve Regeneration group at the IBMC/i3S- University of Porto. Her group is focused on understanding cytoskeleton organization and dynamics during axon growth, degeneration and regeneration. Throughout the years, Monica has been the PI of grants from multiple national and international funding agencies, charities, accelerator programs and research sponsored agreements. Monica authored over 70 papers, including recent publications as a senior author in reference journals (Plos Biology 2022, Brain 2022, Developmental Cell 2022, Journal of Clinical Investigation 2020, eLife 2020). Beyond her publications, Monica participates regularly as an invitated speaker in leading conferences including EMBO and GRC meetings and International Societies. Monica has always been involved in the education of the next generation of (neuro)scientists by organizing post-graduate programs, and training students (10 concluded PhDs, 3 ongoing)and postdoctoral fellows (7 past, 3 ongoing) in her group. She is currently the director of the IBMC, one of the founder institutes of the i3S- University of Porto.
