Diogo Trigo is an expert in nervous system homeostasis who was in 2020 approved for funding for an Assistant Researcher position in the 3rd competitive FCT CEEC. He holds a PhD in Neurology from University College London (2014), where he characterised axonal ionic and mitochondrial homeostasis. Upon graduating, he joined the Corcoran group at King's College London as an associate researcher studying mitochondria homeostasis in spinal cord injury. In this group, Diogo systematically promoted neuroregeneration in vivo and acquired state of the art knowhow in the area of RA signalling from a world reference group and personally established mitochondria research tools. At KCL he held teaching roles (as BSc demonstrator) and supervision roles (tutoring 4 BSc and MSc students ). In 2018, after 9 years abroad, Diogo returned to Portugal. He studied mechanisms of cellular homeostasis in ageing-related pathologies in IBiMED, UA, where he now is researching neuroprotective therapies in neurodegenerative diseases and spinal cord injury. He has teaching (tutored BSc students; lectured in MSc disciplines and in the Biomedicine PhD Programme) and supervising positions (2 BSc, 3 MSc, 1 PhD Student). In 2020 he was awarded a CEEC Assistant Researcher contract to study mitochondria mediated therapies for healthy ageing; in 2021 he was funded by FCT to explore and develop a drug delivery system to promote neuroregeneration after spinal cord injury, awarded by Caixa Impulse Validate to accelerate project translation into the clinical market. In the last 2 years he had projects as PI funded by MEDISIS, EIT Health, RISE for Impact, FCT, and La Caixa Foundation, being in the early stages of research independence. Reviewer for FASEB, J Pathol, Front in Neurosci, Front in Neurol, Brain, and Front in Psyc. He is a member of the Portuguese Society for Neuroscience, the executive board of ATG – the GABBA Program Alumni Association, and founding member of GreenLab iBiMED.
