MANUEL JOAQUIM SÁ LOPES TAVARES CALÓ completed the Integrated Master's in Civil Engineering in 2017 from the University of Porto Faculty of Engineering and Degree in Architecture in 2007 from the University of Porto Faculty of Architecture. He is a Researcher at the University of Porto Faculty of Engineering and works in the area of Engineering Sciences and Technologies with an emphasis on Civil Engineering. In his professional activities, he interacted with Professor Cecília Vale in co-authoring scientific works. In his Ciência Vitae curriculum, the most frequent terms in the context of scientific, technological and artistic-cultural production are: Eco-efficient materials and durability; Transport and Energy. The master thesis in Civil Engineering, entitled “O Lanço A+B da Autoestrada do Baixo Alentejo – Terraplenagens e controlo laboratorial”, was written under the supervision of Professor Jaime Ribeiro in a non-academic environment. It gathers the observations during the construction operations for a major highway, foccusing on earthworks and their laboratorial control, typical testing on soils and clays, and evaluating the compaction degree of embankment layers. Already as a doctoral student writes together with his supervisor, Professor Cecília Vale, a review paper called “Potencialidades e fragilidades da utilização de resíduos em misturas betuminosas”, which is an early attempt for a more serious research and consists in a literature review about waste recycling in bituminous mixtures. This work was later presented for an audience at the 10th Portuguese Road and Rail congress that was held at LNEC in July 2022. Afterwards, another document written in shape of a poster and summarizes some of the early laboratorial work which was conducted at FEUP´s material laboratory. It presents and discusses some test results on a AC 20 bituminous mixture with waste, in this case a non-selected construction and demolition waste. This poster was displayed during the 5th Doctoral Congress held at FEUP in June 2023. More recently a paper entitled “Laboratory study on Asphalt Concrete with polypropylene plastic and non-selected construction and demolition waste” was written and is the continuation of the laboratorial work done previously. This paper will be presented in a International Conference on maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements to be held in July 2024.
