Dr. Maria João Quadrado (MJQ) is a talented Ophthalmologist with 30+ years in eye care, particularly Cornea and Refractive Surgery. She is graduated in Medicine (1987) Master in Propedêutica Oftalmológica (1994) and PhD in Health Sciences (2013) by the University of Coimbra, Portugal. Her PhD thesis was titled -Evaluation of corneal microstructure using confocal in vivo microscopy-. MJQ was Clinical Resident (1988-1989) and Resident in Ophthalmology (1990-1994, final grade 18.60/20.00) in Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra (CHUC), Portugal. Since 1995, she is Attending Physician at Centro de Responsabilidade Integrado de Oftalmologia (CRIO), CHUC. Related to her medical career at CRIO - CHUC, she is Coordinator of 1) Cornea and Refractive Surgery Department (since 2002), 2) Eye Bank (since 2003), 3) Surgery Department (since 2018); formerly, she was also Coordinator of Residency in Ophthalmology (1995-2017). Importantly, while Coordinator, she conducted the accreditation of the Eye Bank of CHUC. Simultaneously, she has been acting as trainer of 1) Residency in Ophthalmology (since 1992), particularly focusing Cornea-related topics, in CHUC, 2) corneal transplantation (since 2011), in Hospital Nélio Mendonça (HNM), Funchal (Portugal); she further actively participated in the organisation of the Eye Bank of HNM. She was also Quality Auditor in collaboration with 1) Entidade Reguladora da Saúde, ERS (2009-2010): evaluation of ambulatory eye surgery conditions of Portuguese Surgery Services, 2) Direção-Geral de Saúde, DGS (2014-2018): inspection of Portuguese Eye Tissue Banks. She was 1) President, 2) member of the Directory Board (2008-2010, 2015-2016) of the Portuguese Society of Ophthalmology, SPO (2015-2016); she is President of the General Meeting of SPO, since 2020. She launched 3 Awards for Best Work in Basic and Clinical Ophthalmology Research, namely Miguel Burnier Award. Concerning scientific meetings, she 1) organised 3 national and 1 European events, 2) chaired 15 events, 3) participated in 13 national and 5 international events. She member of several (13) Ophthalmology-related national and international associations, namely Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), European Eye Bank Association (EEBA), European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), European Society of Cornea and Ocular Surface (EuCornea), European Vision Institute Clinical Research Network (EVICR.net), and International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). MJQ is Invited Assistant Professor (since 2015) and has been lecturer of Masters in Medicine (since 1992) and PhD in Health Science (since 2016), in Faculty of Medicine of University of Coimbra. She has supervised Master (5) and PhD (current, 1) students, and has been part of jury (10) of Master and PhD degrees. Besides experienced ophthalmologist, MJQ is also researcher at Coimbra Institute for Clinical and Biomedical Research, iCBR; she has actively participated in 26 research projects and/or clinical trials. Her scientific research was awarded with 12 prizes in national and international meetings. She has published more than 100 papers, books, and chapters, among which 20 were published in international peer-reviewed journals. She was invited speaker (70) in national and international meetings; she has 213 and 247 oral communications in international and national meetings, respectively; she authored 8 live video surgeries.
