Gil Gonçalves graduated in Chemistry and obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Aveiro. In 2016, he began working at the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) on neutron capture therapy. He has also completed short-term research visits at the Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Energy in Pavia and the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Trieste. He currently leads a research group at the University of Aveiro, dedicated to the microfluidic fabrication of multifunctional nanoparticles for cancer theranostics, the design and development of advanced tumor-on-chip models, and the investigation of tumor bioelectricity pathways. Furthermore, his research interests extend to the development of nanostructured materials for environmental applications. He has (co-)authored numerous scientific papers in the research field (h-index 30 and > 4000 citations (Scopus), communications in national and international conferences and he is a regular reviewer for high impact scientific journals in the field of multifunctional nanomaterials for health and environment.

2024 Uma investigação desenvolvida por investigadores da Universidade de Aveiro (UA), criou um método para otimizar o planeamento terapêutico por quimioterapia recorrendo à física dos Buracos Negros. Este trabalho teve como principal objetivo desenvolver tratamentos personalizados capazes de aumentar a eficácia dos fármacos em uso clínico. 2023/06/02 Herein, a new concept based on carbon nanomaterials that seal 6Li active NCT nuclides is investigated. The 6Li active species are located in the inner cavity of the nanocarrier (carbon nanohorns or carbon nanotubes) and therefore, completely protected from the biological environment, avoiding toxicity and degradation. After encapsulation of the active cargo, the external surface of the nanocarrier is modified for improved biocompatibility. 2023/03/24 O trabalho de investigação multidisciplinar, desenvolvido por um consórcio internacional coordenado por investigadores da Universidade de Aveiro (UA), permitiu pela primeira vez desenvolver uma nova abordagem terapêutica de cancro baseada na captura de neutrões por lítio (LiNCT). Para isso, foram exploradas nanocápsulas de carbono, capazes de acomodar elevadas concentrações de lítio enriquecido (6Li), por forma a promover a destruição efetiva das células tumorais após irradiação por neutrões.
