Diana Lopes holds a Bachelor's degree in Bioengineering from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, an MSc in Microbiology from University of Aveiro, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the same institution. During her MSc research, she studied the effect of photosensitizers (porphyrins) on Escherichia coli membrane lipids in photodynamic therapy, and investigated oxidative stress. Following her MSc, she worked as a trainee at the Laboratory of Microbiology and Food Technology (ICBAS, Porto, Portugal), focusing on clinical microbiology of biological samples. Afterward, she developed work as a researcher at the Portuguese Institute for the Ocean and Atmosphere (IPMA, Porto, Portugal) within National System for Monitoring Bivalve Mollusks, performing biological sampling of bivalves and waters, identification and characterization of chemical and microbiological contamination sources and database management. Diana was awarded a doctoral scholarship in 2017 and completed her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in september 2021. Her Ph.D focused on valorization of lipids from seaweeds. Currently, she is a contracted researcher by Agenda PRR Pacto da Bioeconomia Azul (Vertical Algas). She works in the marine lipidomics field, with particular emphasis on microalgae and seaweeds. Her research involves mass spectrometry based characterization of lipids and fatty acids, bioprospecting lipid extracts for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative activities, fractionation lipid extracts to isolate classes of interest, and employing integrated omics (lipidomics, proteomics and metabolomics).
