In 2017, Rute Vanessa Novais Ferreira (RNF) obtained her master’s in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minho with a thesis developed at the Centre for Biological Engineering (CEB). During her MSc, she demonstrated a passion for bacteriophage research and entrepreneurship by leading the project “Phage-Care – Personalized Antimicrobials to Combat Infections Caused by Multi-Resistant Pathogens,” a finalist in the Angelini University Award! 16/17. Then, RNF contributed as a research fellow to notable Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT)-funded projects, including INOVCONTROLFIL: Innovative Strategies to Control Filamentous Overgrowth in Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment (PTDC/AAG-TEC/3331/2014) and Development of an Engineered-Phage Cocktail to Combat Helicobacter pylori Infections and Prevent Gastric Cancer (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-029182). She was later awarded an FCT studentship to pursue her PhD, during which she conducted part of her research at the i3S – Instituto de Investigação e Inovação em Saúde, Porto. In December 2024, RNF completed her PhD in Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Minho. Subsequently, she worked as a research fellow on the Phage Therapy project (UIDB/04469/2020). RNF has published six peer-reviewed papers in international journals, five as first author (h-index = 5), and has presented her work in four oral communications and multiple posters at international conferences. Beyond research, she was an instructor in the 5th International Hands-on Phage Biotechnology course (HOP V) and a staff member for the Viruses of Microbes 2022 international conference. She also completed the International Mentoring Program of the International Mentoring Foundation for the Advancement of Higher Education (IMFAHE), highlighting her commitment to professional development. Her outreach activities include participating in CEB open days, workshops, and exhibitions. She received an honorable mention in the 4th Portuguese Society of Microbiology (SPM) Science Communication competition and was recently honored with the 2024 SPM Young Researcher Award in the Health Microbiology category. At a personal level, RNF is determined, organized, and hardworking, demonstrating proactivity, autonomy, and strong teamwork skills.
