M Margarida Oliveira (MMO) is Full Professor (Catedrática) since June 2020 at Univ. Nova de Lisboa, Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier. She graduated in Biology - Scientific branch, in 1983 (Licenciatura), by Univ. de Lisboa, Fac. de Ciências (FCUL). While teaching at FCUL (1985-2008), she successfully completed exams of Scientific and Pedagogic Capacity (1988), was awarded PhD (Doutoramento) in Plant Biotechnology (1993) and was awarded the Habilitation degree (Agregação) in Biology (2001, always through FCUL). ___ From 1996 to 1998, she directed the Plant Genetic Engineering Lab at iBET (Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica) and in in 1998 she was invited to join Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB) as researcher. In 2008 she won an Associate Professor position in Plant Biology at ITQB, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. ___ She is currently heading the Genomics of Plant Stress Unit of ITQB (that gathers 3 labs), where she directs the Plant Functional Genomics Lab.___ From Mar.2011 to Apr.2023, MMO was vice-Director of ITQB NOVA, and since 2015 she Directs the FCT R&D Unit GREEN-IT Bioresources for Sustainability, awarded with Excellent in 2020, that integrates researchers from ITQB, iBET, INIAV, IGC, INSA and InnovPlantProtect. GREEN-IT addresses the challenge of ensuring food security and adequate resources for a growing human population, by deciphering basic mechanisms of plant-environment interactions and translating knowledge into innovation for plant breeding, while guaranteeing environmental sustainability.___ In line with the evolution of her research, knowledge and activities, MMO key goals include:__ a) To continue contributing to understand how different plants perceive and interact with the environment, aiming to use this knowledge to improve stress tolerance in crops and make better use of the available resources to achieve improved and safer products (for food /feed or forest-based);__ b) To consolidate a highly competent research team at ITQB NOVA and at GREEN-IT R&D Unit; __ c) To contribute to enlarge the number of students interested in Plant Sciences and educated with a strong background in plant biology, biotechnology and breeding strategies, and with a sustainability mindset; __ d) To ensure that key areas of plant science research of particular importance to the current climate threats and sustainability demands, are in place within ITQB NOVA and the GREEN-IT Consortium;__ e) To contribute for a stronger Plant Sciences community at national level.__ Along her career, MMO edited 4 Books, Published 16 Book Chapters and 164 scientific articles (162 in Scopus, with 7634 citations and h-index= 44, by Oct 2024). She also presented 70 Oral communications as Invited/Plenary/Keynote Speaker in various scientific events (National & International Congresses, Symposia, Workshops, Seminars).___She supervised or co-supervised 30 PhD and 17 MSc students who successfully defended their thesis, and she is (co)supervising another 6 PhD students.___ MMO also has extensive teaching activity at FCUL, ITQB NOVA, and other (inter-)national institutions, and also participated as Evaluator in various national and international commissions. ___ She attracted funding for research, at National and International level (46 and 9 projects, respectively), and has been largely contributing with Extension activities, providing services to Associations, to Competence and Technical Centres, and Supporting a National Authority (ASAE) with science-based recommendations.__ She also contributed to create innovative business (Coordinating a Collaborative Laboratory Initiative approved with Excellent - InnovPlantProtect Association) and is investing in science dissemination at various levels (workshops, TV, radio, newspapers, other media).__ MMO organized 17 congresses (3 as chair of large international events)and 4 Workshops, participating in the Organization of another 11 Workshops or Conferences.
