I hold a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Cambridge (UK) and a Biochemistry graduate degree from Faculdade de Ciências, University of Lisbon (Portugal). With over 20 years of international experience in chromatin, epigenetics, immunology and molecular medicine, my research interests have evolved from gene regulation orchestrated by chromatin remodeling factors to understanding the impact of regulating gene expression in innate immunity and disease. Recently, I served as the PI of the Exploratory Project titled "Role for histone eviction in the metabolic changes associated with sepsis". My work has shown the potential of regulating gene expression to control inflammation, specifically in the context of disease (sepsis, leukemia, rheumatoid arthritis, sleep disorders, appendicitis). I have focused on pathways orchestrated by transcriptional regulators, chromatin remodelers and RNAi molecules. To date, I have over 30 publications with more than 1000 citations and an i10-index of 17 (Google Scholar). As first author, I have six publications and I am a co-corresponding author of a recent publication. I supervised one Masters student (2022-2023) and mentored three Ph.D. students (2018-2022). I participated as jury in one Masters thesis defense. I am an Invited Tutor at FCUL (Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon). I have organized one international symposium and overseen collaborations with the Genomics Group at EMBL (Heidelberg), the Structural Laboratory at the Helmholtz Zentrum (Munich), and clinicians at Hospital de Santa Maria and Hospital da Luz (Lisboa). I am a member of the Portuguese Society of Immunology (SPI). Since 2017, I have served as an evaluator of the European Commission proposals Marie Sklodowska-Curie H2020-MSCA-IF under the Life Sciences topic (7 editions). I am also Review Editor of the Inflammation section at the Journal Frontiers in Immunology. I have presented my work regularly at international meetings, including three oral presentations. I am certified to work with animal models and to coordinate projects with animals by FELASA.
