Terhi is a postdoctoral fellow in the eGames Lab research project (IST-ID) and a member of the Interactive Technologies Institute (ITI/LARSyS). Terhi completed her PhD in 2022 in the audiovisual content creation track at the University of Porto. Her PhD was supervised by Dr. Patrícia Gouveia (Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon) and Dr. Diamantino Freitas (Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto). Prior to her PhD in digital media, Terhi completed an MA and a BA in Art Education at the University of Lapland in Finland. Terhi's PhD dissertation explores the use of voice / interaction, that is: voice, speech recognition, synthetic voice, texts, language, combinatorial language and play in digital, browser-based art to explore various aspects of human migratory movement, where human migratory movement is understood as movement. Terhi's PhD was practice-based / artistic research, with theoretical work progressing alongside a practice of creating interactive and combinatorial/generative artworks about migration. Her artistic skills unite with ever growing programming skills to create intriguing perspectives on the topics that her inquisitive mind decides to take on. At the core of Terhi's research practice is the aim to explore how different kinds of artistic approaches to interactivity (through code) as well as recorded voice, texts, poetry (voice / interaction) can converge to further our understanding of the topics at hand. Terhi tends to create predominantly socially-engaged art, because the artistic process is for her first and foremost a way to think about the world around her and to process her observations. A recent work, Gray hairs, speculates about the gendered practice of dyeing one's hair. Another recent work, Infinite scroll, speculates on the connections between the infinite scroll -interface and money. Other works in progress include an ongoing series of crochet-based works (circles), as well as a work about the relationship between her own body and the moon (My body, the moon) which speculates about the impact that mining on the moon could have on women's bodies.
