Rebekah is a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Molecular Neuroscience and Gene Therapy Lab at Algarve Biomedical Center Research Institute (ABC-RI) of Universidade do Algarve, also working as an Assistant Professor at the Universidade do Algarve. She finished her Ph.D. in 2024 at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the Universidade do Algarve, in a project focused on using CRISPR-based molecular tools to design and develop new therapeutic strategies for Spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2), a rare neurodegenerative disease. Throughout Rebekah’s doctoral studies, she also successfully established innovative induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) models for SCA2 and developed a new transgenic mouse model for SCA2, which serve as valuable tools for elucidating disease mechanisms and testing potential therapeutic interventions. Her previous academic degrees include a Master’s degree in Neurosciences in 2019 from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2016 from the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the Universidade do Algarve. Additionally, Rebekah has a post-graduation in Entrepreneurship from ITQB and NOVA School of Business and Economics and is co-owner of an international patent (PCT/IB2022/054493). In 2022 Rebekah co-founded a biotechnology company, Aquracy Therapeutics, to explore the patent’s asset and to transfer it to the clinic. Considering the past 5 years, Rebekah has enrolled in two main scientific projects, one as a doctoral fellow and the other as a research fellow. She has published 6 articles in specialized journals and presented her work nationally and internationally at 17 congresses and meetings, namely, as first author in 6 oral communications and author/co-author in 13 poster presentations. In the aforementioned, she won 2 best presentations in the value of 500€ each. Academically, Rebekah co-supervised 5 undergraduate students. In her professional activities, she participated in 6 pitch competitions in project acceleration programs, winning 1 with a value of 5.000€. Rebekah was also awarded 4 prizes, namely a PhD fellowship from FCT, a StartUp Research scholarship from Oeiras City Council, an International Advanced Course scholarship from the European Society for Neurochemistry, and a general admission to WebSummit 2022 from RESTART Algarve. She is a member of 1 national (Portuguese Society for Neuroscience - SPN) and 1 international (European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy - ESGCT) scientific societies and was a member of the pedagogic council board at the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the Universidade do Algarve from 2021 until 2023.
