Dr Susana Sampaio-Dias is a Senior Lecturer in Journalism at the School of Film Media and Creative Technologies at the University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom (FMCT/UoP). She holds a PhD in Journalism Studies from Cardiff University, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK). Her research and teaching areas of specialism include journalism and human rights, press freedom, the safety of journalists, gender equality in newsrooms, well-being and job satisfaction in journalism, news production, ethnography, journalism in Lusophone Africa, youth-oriented news, and environmental news. Currently, she focuses on the online safety of journalists, caregiving responsibilities in journalism, and early-career journalists. She co-chairs the Journalism and Creative Writing research group at FMCT/UoP. She was previously the Global Engagement Lead and the Journalism Media and Society research group research group lead of the Journalism Media and Society research group (FMCT/UoP) and has also collaborated on various national and international projects. Notably, she was a guest collaborator for the national project “O género nas pandemias de ódio: media sociais, Covid 19 e as mulheres jornalistas” funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, she was a Co-Investigator for the Born Free Foundation’s “News for Nature” project and is currently the Principal Investigator for Guinea-Bissau for the global project “Worlds of Journalism Study”. Susana’s research has been published in various peer-reviewed international journals, including Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, International Journal of Communication, African Journalism Studies. She has also presented her findings at numerous international conferences, including IAMCR, ECREA, Political Studies Association, and SOPCOM (Portuguese Communication Association). She was one of the founding members of the SOPCOM Young Researchers’ working group. In addition to her research work, Susana previously worked as a journalist and news producer for RTP Rádio e Televisão de Portugal, the Portuguese public service broadcaster (2003-2014). She also worked for the European Communication Research and Education Association (ECREA) (2010-2015). She is actively involved with Guinea-Bissau’s National Association of Journalists. Her first monograph, Reporting Human Rights, was published by Peter Lang in 2016. Susana is a reviewer for several academic journals and publishers, as well as funding bodies, and a supervisor for several undergraduate, Masters and PhD students.
