Ernesto Deus has a BSc and MSc. in Geography (University of Coimbra), a PhD course (curricular units) in Geography and Land Planning: Specialty in Remote Sensing and GIS (Nova University of Lisbon), and a PhD in Forestry Engineering and Natural Resources (University of Lisbon) concluded in December 2019. The PhD thesis was mostly dedicated to the ecology of eucalypts in the introduced range, particularly Eucalyptus globulus in Portugal. Between 2005 and 2008 he was a volunteer in the League for the Protection of Nature, where he participated in several activities of awareness to environmental issues, including being a speaker in different events, and developing activities such as public visits to bogs to observe wildlife and biodiversity. Professional activities include a provision of services for a government agency responsible for the management of water resources between August 2009 and September 2010, in order to delimit their coastline jurisdiction (Maritime Public Domain) in Central Portugal using GIS, covering 13 coastal municipalities. Since 2012 he participated in different research projects: FIRELAND (PTDC/AGR-CFL/104651/2008); WildGum (PTDC/AGR-FOR/2471/2012); Aliens & Flames (PDR2020-101-030919); WildGum II (PTDC/ASP-SIL/30435/2017); InduForestFire (PCIF/MOS/0129/2018). Since 2017 he helped conceive and submit three successful applications of research projects in competitive calls (Aliens & Flames; WildGum II; InduForestFire), totalling more than 1 million euros of investment. He was the co-author of: 13 scientific papers in international, peer-reviewed journals (H-index = 9); one book (editor); four book chapters; two booklets. In 2022 he was Guest Editor of a Special Issue in the Journal Forests related to the ecology of eucalypts in the introduced range. Since 2017 he was speaker in three international conferences and was the co-author of posters in three international conferences. His knowledge fields include: invasive plants; fire ecology; prescribed fire; fire behaviour; wildfire analyses; landscape dynamics. His technical skills include: statistical analyses; niche modelling; remote sensing; fire behaviour simulators; Geographical Information Systems. Since 2018 he lectured several courses related to prescribed fire, GIS and fire behaviour simulators. Since 2019 he has been lecturing as an Invited Assistant Professor (2019) and later as an Invited Adjunct Professor (2020 forward) in the Agriculture School of the Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra, in the MSc. course of Forest Resources and in a Professional Technical Course in Forest Protection, in curricular units related to the use of fire and wildfire analyses. Here he supervised the internship of five students working on some of the ongoing projects, including an ERASMUS student. He was also mentor of another ERASMUS student working on project WildGum II. He also agued the final work of one student from a professional course, three BSc students and one MSc. student. Most of his research has been dedicated to eucalypt ecology and impacts in the introduced range. In this regard, he participated as a research fellow and doctorate researcher in the projects WildGum and WildGum II, investigating the naturalisation of eucalypts in the introduced range. Currently he is working on the project Aliens & Flames, investigating the fire ecology of two invasive plants (Acacia dealbata and Hakea sericea) and the use of prescribed fire for their control.
