Sofia Mendes Saraiva is currently Technical-Scientific Coordinator at the Polytechnique Institute of Guarda (IPG) in the functional area of Health and Welfare in the field of Health Care Support Technologies and is a researcher at the Center of Potential and Innovation of Natural Resources (CPIRN) of the IPG. She is an ambassador of the Young Scientist Committee of the Controlled Release Society (YSC) and member of the Organization Committee of Pint of Science Portugal (Guarda). Sofia holds a doctor degree in Drug Research and Development (International degree, Cum Laude) by the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), since 2019. She developed her PhD through a Marie Sklodowska-Curie scholarship, on "Polymeric nanocapsules for the ocular delivery of siRNA", under the supervision of Professor María José Alonso. This project was developed within the European consortium "Design and development of advanced NAnomedicines to overcome Biological BArriers and to treat severe diseases" (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2014, Grant ID 642028). During this period, she was also a visiting pre-doctoral researcher at the group of Professor Francesco Nicotra and Professor Laura Russo (University of Milan, Italy) and at the biotechnology company Sylentis S. A (Madrid, Spain). During her PhD, Sofia also participated in the 7th edition of the entrepreneurship program YUZZ Jóvenes con ideas, funded and promoted by Banco Santander. The project Sadvia, developed by Sofia Dr Matilde Durán was selected among the different Spanish projects and awarded the prize of "YUZZ Mujer 2016". From 2019 to 2021 she was a post-doctoral researcher at the Nano-Oncology and Translational Therapeutics Unit, directed by Dr de la Fuente, at the Instituto de Investigación Sanitária de Santiago de Compostela (IDIS, Spain). Herein she worked on different projects regarding the development of nanotechonology-based therapeutics for the management of cancer, cell senescence and skin conditions, in collaboration with national and international research groups. In addition, she was involved in the European project "Photoactivable nanoparticles to immunostimulate the tumor microenvironment in pancreatic cancer" (ERA-NET Euronanomed 3, Grant ID: JTC2018-041). Sofia has participated in different national and international workshops, congresses and seminars lectured by relevant names in the field of nanotechnology, biomedicine and entrepreneurship. Currently, as a researcher at the CPIRN-IPG since the end of 2021, her research interests focus on the development of novel nanotherapeutics, based on natural products, for the management ocular and skin conditions.
