I am a research assistant at the Stem Cell Engineering Research Group (SCERG) of the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB) and the Associate Laboratory — Institute for Health and Bioeconomy (i4HB). My main work, carried out as part of a collaboration agreement between iBB and Phoenestra GmbH, an Austrian biotech startup, involves the use of stirred-tank bioreactors for the expansion of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and the production of extracellular vesicles. Currently, I am also participating as a researcher in one of the ongoing projects at iBB, namely SMART, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia. Additionally, I am enrolled as a PhD student in Bioengineering at Instituto Superior Técnico of the University of Lisbon. From September 2016 to February 2022, I attended the Integrated Master's in Biomedical Engineering program at NOVA School of Science and Technology (NOVA SST). During this time, I carried out internships at the Microbial Development Lab of the Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB), where I conceived plasmid vectors and performed bacterial transformation, and the Neuronal Growth and Plasticity Lab of the Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas (CEDOC), where I manipulated and studied Drosophila melanogaster animal models. I undertook my master's thesis at SCERG-iBB, with the objective of exploring and validating cost-efficient strategies for expanding hiPSCs in vertical-wheel bioreactors. For this purpose, I developed a computational tool for the economic modeling of an hiPSC expansion bioprocess and tested B8, a novel pluripotent cell culture medium. Upon graduating, I was distinguished with a NOVA SST Merit Scholarship and received the Best Engineering Student of NOVA SST and Best Biomedical Engineering Student of NOVA SST awards. To date, I have participated as a researcher in 1 concluded project, have published 2 articles in peer-reviewed journals, published 1 book chapter and participated in 12 scientific events, having carried out 8 poster and 2 oral presentations. The computational model I developed is open source and is available on GitHub (https://github.com/wssalvador/BEMSCA).
