I am Maria Salomé Lira Duarte. In 2013 I completed a Master degree at the University of Minho in Biological Engineering, specifically in Environmental Technology In the last semester of my master I have done an internship (equivalent to the master thesis) for a period of 6 months at Wetsus - Center of excellence for sustainable water technology, placed in Leeuwarden (The Netherlands). In November of 2018, I completed the PhD in Bioengineering (MIT Portugal Program) at the University of Minho. During my PhD I have integrated the research team of the ERC Project "Novel Anaerobes for a Biobased Economy" that has funded my PhD project entitled "Microbial interactions in the transformation of long-chain fatty acids in anaerobic reactors". At the moment I am a Junior Researcher in the Center of Biological Engineering (University of Minho). In 2022 I was awarded with a granted proposal within the scope of the Individual CEEC of the FCT. My work is focused on AD systems, especially in continuous anaerobic processes. I have participated in 2 European and 6 National projects. I also had several oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences. I published 2 book chapters and 11 papers in high-impact journals: 6 as 1st author and 3 as corresponding author. I recently participated in a granted patent (PT 118140 A) on a biotechnological approach to treat hydrocarbon-containing wastewater with biofuel production. I am the co-supervisor of one PhD student, and I have mentored 4 research fellows, 2 MSc and 5 PhD students. In parallel with the research project, I also do laboratory management for a team of 20 researchers with 2 laboratories. I consider myself a persistent and persevering person, very committed with my work, and above of all very motivated for research. I am always trying to do more and better, with the focus on a continuous improvement of myself and of my work.
