Estela Vicente graduated in Environmental Engineering from the University of Aveiro (UA) in 2011 and completed her MSc in 2013. Her MSc thesis focused on the characterisation of emissions from residential wood combustion and mitigation measures, developed within the LIFE project AIRUSE. Following her MSc, she joined the Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry Research Group at the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (UA) as a research fellow for the aforementioned European research project. In 2017, she was awarded a PhD grant fellowship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). She completed her PhD in Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of Aveiro in 2021, achieving approval with distinction and merit. Her thesis, entitled "Chemical Characteristics and Toxicity of Particles from Residential Biomass Combustion", provided an in-depth investigation into the chemical and toxicological properties of gaseous and particulate emissions from conventional and emerging biofuels used in different residential appliances. Her research encompassed laboratory combustion tests and the assessment of these emissions' effects on both indoor and outdoor air quality, as well as human exposure. Alongside her PhD, she contributed to research on the characterisation of particulate matter in urban environments within the SOPRO project and planned and conducted indoor air quality sampling campaigns. Her work led to the development of new chemical and toxicological profiles for key urban sources such as road dust resuspension and residential activities including heating, cooking, ironing, and vacuuming. In May 2021, she joined the Atmospheric Environment research group at the University of León (Spain) as a researcher in a project assessing the impact of coal combustion on air quality. In 2022, her application to the 5th edition of the Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus was granted by FCT, and in 2023, she began her CEEC contract at UA. Despite her relatively early career stage, she has published 56 indexed articles (23 as first author), with over 65% resulting from international collaborations (1472 citations, h-index of 22 on Scopus as of 12/02/2025). She has also (co)authored two books and contributed to over 70 scientific event presentations.
