Mário Santos concluded his PhD in Biotechnology in 2014, a master in Biological engineering in 2008, and bachelor in Biological sciences in 2007, all at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa. His PhD studies focused on the symbiotic interactions between Sinorhizobium meliloti and the host leguminous plants Medicago sativa and Medicago truncatula, namely the biochemical characterization of the transcriptional regulator EmrR and the major facilitator superfamily transporter EmrA/EmrB from S. meliloti (Santos et al. 2014). During his PhD he co-supervised 3 Master theses and 5 undergraduate students. After his PhD, he started his current position as lab manager of the Plant Genomics group, at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), under the supervision of Dr. Jörg Becker. His tasks include the organization of the laboratory, taking care of orders and stocks, as well as preparing all the necessary reagents and material. Moreover, he has been involved in a number of ongoing projects in the group (e.g., Pereira et al. 2020). He has also been directly involved in the development and optimization of FACS protocols to isolate sperm cells and vegetative nuclei from Arabidopsis thaliana (Santos et al. 2017 and Misra et al. 2019). He is also a part of a collaboration between the Plant Genomics group and the Flow Cytometry and Advanced Imaging Units at IGC, aiming at the development of new methods for sorting of gametes in angiosperms. He has also been part of the organizing team for the EMBO workshop “New shores in land plant evolution” and for a small meeting for the Mosstech project. During his scientific career he has published 5 articles in international peer-reviewed journals and has co-authored two book chapters. In addition he has been participating regularly in various outreach activities, communicating science to the general public. These include, amongst others, Inspirar Ciência 2018, a workshop on Plant Biology for high school teachers, IGC Open day, and Science Alive - IGC stand at the 2019 NOS Alive Music Festival.
