I have a strong background in immunology, with a specific focus on B cell selection antibody cloning, and vaccine responses. With this skillset I was recruited as an assistant professor to a research program headed by Anna Färnert after my postdoc at the Garvan Institute in Australia. This has resulted in great synergy based on my expertise in basic B cell biology that I have gained over the years with Anna Färnert’s established patient cohorts on various infectious diseases. I initially worked with B cell responses in malaria, where we used mass cytometry with unsupervised analysis in a discovery-based approach to find novel B cell subsets and activation patterns. We could describe several novel aspects of atypical B cell biology, recently published in JCI insight. Since 2013 I was awarded 13 research grants as main applicant and 4 as co-applicant. In 2019 I was awarded a VR starting grant, enabling me to start my own Research Team at the Division of Infectious Diseases to continue investigating these cells more mechanistically. When widening the scope of the mass cytometry analysis, beyond B cells, several other modifications to the immune response in malaria could be identified. This expanded my interest in using systems immunology as a discovery tool to identify targets for further mechanistic studies. To accommodate the complexity of analysing these datasets, I recruited a bioinformatician, Julius Lautenbach, with training at SciLIfeLab who is now registered as a PhD student. Together we have developed a pipeline for comprehensive analysis of different biological and clinical datasets, enabling us to identify features associated with different aspects of an infection. Through my affiliation and close connection with the Department of Infectious Diseases, Karolinska University Hospital, I have established several national and international collaborations to use this pipeline in different clinical cohorts, with promising preliminary data already generated, leading to both diagnostic and in-depth mechanistic studies. Over the last three years, I have co-supervised six PhD students and been the main supervisor for ten master level student projects. I have also done the required course work to be a main PhD supervisor. From 2019 I also became deputy course organiser for the 15 HCTS credit bachelor program course “Molecular Medicine: Cardiometabolic and Infectious diseases”, where I am responsible for the infectious disease part, making up half the course contents. These commitments together with several first and last author manuscripts planned for submission during 2020, will allow me to apply to become a Docent in early 2021, reaching the criteria to become a group leader at the Department of Medicine, KI. I am review editor ar Frontiers in Immunology (since 2016) and ad hoc reviewer for the journals “Nature Communications”, “Vaccine”, “PLoS One”, “Immunology and Cell Biology” “Communications biology”, “Molecular Immunology”, “Clinical and Translational Immunology”, and “International journal of Parasitology”.
