Joana Gaifem (JG) is a PhD researcher at Institute for Research and Innovation in Health (i3S), University of Porto. JG is graduated in Biology (2009) and master in Environmental Contamination and Toxicology (2011) by the University of Porto. Before enrolling a PhD JG worked for 3 years as a research fellow in Microbiology and Infection research projects. JG was admitted to the Interuniversity PhD Program in Aging and Chronic Diseases in 2015 at ICVS/UMinho working on microbiome factors contributing to protection/susceptibility in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). During PhD, JG was awarded with an EMBO Short-Term Fellowship to move as a visiting researcher at Universitätsklinikum Jena (Germany) and work on a biochip-based human gut model to assess microbiota impact in epithelial barrier. The PhD project allowed the first identification of a key microbiota signature that confers protection against IBD. The PhD was completed on March 2019. JG moved to i3S in November 2019 as a Post-Doc researcher working on the role of glycans in IBD immunopathogenesis and the crosstalk between glycans and intestinal microbiome. In 2020, JG was awarded with a contracted researcher position at the competitive Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus - 3rd Edition, from Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The work developed during her post-doc set the basis for several funded projects, such as the European funded project GlycanTrigger (HEurope). JG is currently PI of a ECCO Grants 2023. She was PI of an ESCMID research grants 2022). In 2024, JG was granted with the prestigious Maria de Sousa award, to study the host-microbiota interactions in IBD. In the host lab, JG was team member of a project funded by USA Department of Defense that aims to identify novel predictive biomarkers for IBD management (PREDICTS) and is currently part of the Horizon Europe-funded GlycanTrigger project. JG has supervised 1 PhD student and 1 MSc student, concluded in 2025 and 2021, respectively; she is currently supervising 2 PhD students and 1 research fellow. JG has a total of 25 publications (23 articles, 2 book chapters) and a h-index of 15.
