I currently teach international relations at the University of Beira Interior where I also head the masters program in the same field as tenure-track Assistant Professor. Recently, I have finished my second PhD, in philosophy of law, focusing on the human rights of migrants at Uppsala University, with a 5-year grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. My VIVA is scheduled for September 7 of the current year and Paulina Ochoa Espejo from Haverford University will be the external examiner. I also hold a PhD from the Department of International Politics in Aberystwyth University and a masters degree from the University of Cambridge. My research interests lie at the intersection of political philosophy, IR theory and the history of international law. Methodologically, I am well versed in intellectual history and my forthcoming research agenda focuses on the human rights of migrants and the history of migration governance. I have taught and supervised students in several universities in the UK, Sweden and Portugal in all subfields of IR and political science as well as in legal research methods. 2017 saw the publication of my book Reinhold Niebuhr and International Relations Theory by Routledge. Last year I co-authored the article ‘A Right to Leave but No Right to Enter Elsewhere? Uncovering the Finisterrae in the Migration Regime in Human Rights’ with Patricia Mindus in the inaugural issue of the Latin American Journal of Human Rights (https://www.revistas.ufg.br/lahrs/article/view/70686). I have been awarded several grants, namely the Calouste Gulbenkian for research at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., the Vice-Chancellor’s grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation at Uppsala University, a grant for the organisation of the annual U4 Conference by the Uppsala Forum for Democracy and Peace, and several Erasmus grants for training and teaching abroad. I have also been a visiting researcher in international security at the University of Ottawa and in international law at the University of Lisbon.
